Mother's Bistro & Bar. Bloody Mary Perfection.
He’s a tall glass of water. A goofy faced 6’ 4”, he walks with a waddle-like limp and a floppy head of hair. A memorable writer, a man of complexities, a man with a refreshingly honest rant; his words are emotional jabs at a convoluted world. And he’s charming, too. On a rare sunny day in Portland, Oregon, he accompanied me to brunch and bloodys at Mother’s Bistro and Bar. We were kindly greeted as we entered the beautiful chandelier and mirror adorned restaurant, and as we were led to our table, I could sense the lively bustle of a joyful brunch crowd. “Two bloodies, please.” Technically called Mother’s Famous Bloody Mary, it was listed under the apt and ingenious sub-heading “BLOODY HANGOVER!*%$#@!” and described as having “house-infused pepper & jalapeno vodka with our secret bloody concoction.” I can happily say that this description was incredibly accurate.
Much like my companion, this tall glass of bloody mary was as refreshing as a tall glass of water. Utterly balanced among saltiness, spice, freshness and garnish, I could have ordered these pint-sized bloody mary perfections all day. The pepper infused vodka provided a lingering heat, while the fresh horseradish provided an upfront kick. The salt rimmed glass was counter balanced by the fresh tomato juice and bright lemon wedge. The garnish was beyond properly presented, including not just the typical olive and celery, but also a bright yellow, spicy pepperoncini. And all I can say is, it takes a lot of effort to provide this much complexity with so much harmony.
Tall, complex, refreshing, and memorable, I am happy to have finally enjoyed a delicious boozy brunch with Mr. Cameron Taylor and even happier to give Mother’s Famous Bloody Mary Celery Stalks.
Post script: I generally avoid ordering omelets at restaurants, mostly due to their usual bland dryness and lack of creativity. But the Greek Frittata was the absolute best frittata I have ever had. Get it, enjoy it, have five bloodys while you’re there.
